October 29, 1618 is when Sir Walter Raleigh or Ralegh died. He was age 65. He died in London, England, when and where he was beheaded.

Occupation and title: Explorer, soldier, courtier, spy, poet, and writer.

Schooling: Oriol College, Oxford

Wife: He was married to Elizabeth Throckmorton.

Religion: Protestant

Children: Damerei, Walter "Wat," and Carew

His parents were: Walter Raleigh, Sr. and Catherine Champermowne.

1584 Queen Elizabeth I gave Sir Walter Raleigh or Ralegh Royal Charter to set up a colony in lands that are not Christian lands.

He gained favor with Queen Elizabeth I and she knighted him in 1585.

What should he be remembered for? He was instrumental in making a permanent English settlement in North America in Virginia.

1591 Sir Walter Raleigh or Ralegh married Elizabeth Throckmorton in secret. She was one of Queen Elizabeth the First's ladies-in-waiting. They did not have the queen's permission and because of this, both Walter and Elizabeth (his wife) were sent to the tower of London.

Raleigh got into a fair amount of mischief or trouble. First, there was she's secret marriage. Then...

1594 Sir Walter Raleigh or Ralegh heard the reports of a city of gold located in South America. He sailed off to find it, but didn't, and he exaggerated his experiences, which led to the myth of El Dorado.

1603 Queen Elizabeth I died.

1603 Sir Walter Raleigh or Ralegh was imprisoned in the Tower of London because he was involved in a plot against King James I.

1616 Sir Walter Raleigh or Ralegh was released from the Tower of London so he could go on a second expedition looking for El Dorado. However, he found more trouble when members of his crew ransacked an outpost of Spain. To appease the Spanish, he was arrested and then executed later on October 29, 1618.

What Am I Doing and Who Am I to Do It?

As I sit here this morning, after everything I did yesterday, and after starting this blog five days ago, and I have developed butterflies and nervousness.

What am I doing? And who am I to do it anyway?

I am not a historian. Not in the least. History was my worse subject in school. Then again, twelve years of leaning about the explorers could do that to anyone. Never kind all of the false history I was taught. For instance, I was taught that Plymouth was the first English colony and that Thanksgiving began there. Both are lies. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement and the first Thanksgiving was at Berkeley Plantation. Both were in Virginia, let me add. Never mind how I was never taught that Virginia was the birthplace of the United States of America. But, the only reason why I know these things is because I lived in Virginia for four years (and visited the historic sits at least once a month) and because of my family tree.

But, no. I am no historian. My degrees are in psychology and chaplaincy, for goodness sake.

So, what am I doing? I am so far out of my league it isn't funny. Who am I to do it? Probably most everyone is far more qualified than I am to write this blog.

Nonetheless, I realize not everyone has a traceable family tree that goes back as far as mine does and they don't have the same ancestry I do. My family tree makes me uniquely qualified to write about my family tree.

But, the historical part... I am scared of erring and of not learning enough, never mind sharing enough. Then, I also am fearful of sharing too much. I sure don't want to bore anyone to pieces.

Then, to complicate things even more, I am attending a writing conference this week and will present this idea and learn more how to write these stories. No pressure. It's all self-imposed pressure, I realize. Am I on track? Am I doing what God really wants me to be doing?

I find sharing the facts a little on the dull side. But, that is what I need to do first. Then, when I write the short stories, there is a background to the story, so it makes even more sense. This is the ultimate goal. I will use short stories of historical fiction to help us go there and see it for ourselves in our minds and imagination. I hope to make history come alive and help us remember the facts, not opinions, of American history.

Yesterday, though, felt great with everything I accomplished. Learning and sharing the facts can be a slight bore, but it wasn't yesterday. In fact, it pumped me up and got me excited for what is to come and my writing short stories of historical fiction based off of my family tree.

I pause.

Yes. This blog is what I am supposed to be doing, regardless of how intimidating and how insecure I feel. This blog is one big homecoming where I learn about my family and the history of the country I love.

Since I leave tomorrow for the writing conference, I pray I am able to get even more done than I did yesterday.

Bear with me dear and precious readers and friends. I will find my way and my rhythm of writing this blog.

Writing this blog is sure stretching me. I am far outside of my comfort zone. However, while it makes me feel horribly uncomfortable and nervous, not wanting to get it wrong, it is not unbearable and I will not try to avoid it. The best things in life come from times of uneasiness and fear. It's what we do with them that counts. I am going to to keep at this no matter what.

Learning history from my family tree will make history come alive and will help me make sense of my nation today and will help me speak out about it. It will also help me pray for my nation.

Leaning, though, is never a fruitless activity. And, I sure love to learn. I cannot wait to see what all I learn. Even though I still wonder... What am I doing and who am I to do it?

Down the Rabbit Hole and Up the Family Tree

Let me begin with the story of how all of this was set into motion. Remember from the last blog post that doing the family tree thing was just... well... not my cup of tea. It wasn't what I was interested in at all.

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE AND UP THE FAMILY TREE

Four years ago, my Granny called me and told me how a family member was working on our family tree and how that family member discovered some interesting and unexpected information. Since Granny sounded interested in it, I was. But, that was the only reason.

After all, before my family member's search, here is what we knew: We knew that Granny's side was here in the U.S. for only four or five generations or so and my grandfather was the second generation. Therefore, we were relatively new to the United States.

Well, we have discovered since how what we thought we knew was not entirely true.

Granny brought to my attention, at this point, how we had a family member by the name of Bryan, Brian with a 'y' she said. At any rate, Bryan Penny lived in Elizabeth City, Virginia in 1670. "How close is that to where you live now?" She asked with hopeful anticipation.

Huh? Pardon? That sure caught my attention as I shrugged my shoulders. We were on the phone, so she couldn't see me.

"Do you know where that is?" She asked me before I could respond. Her excitement and curiosity was more than evident at this point. I couldn't let her down.

"I don’t have any idea. But, give me a moment. I can find out." My heart picked up its pace and I had the sense I just fell down a rabbit hole, but wasn't sure why.

Thank the Lord, I was at my desk so it was easy for me to do a quick Internet search and lo and behold, I discovered where I lived was what was once called Elizabeth Cittie, not to be confused with modern day Elizabeth City in North Carolina. "Granny, you won't believe this... It's right where I live."

We both chuckled.

"Well, isn't that something?" Granny asked, but it was more of a praise than a question.

My husband and I lived in the Tidewater area of Virginia, also known as Hampton Roads, near the cities of Hampton and Newport News, just north of Norfolk and across the bridge. We lived on the peninsula and had for about a year at this point.

The history in this part of Virginia is out of this world. It is a history lover's dream and it will make anyone who didn't like history like it. I was the latter, once again.

When we moved to the area, we had no idea about the true history, or the extent of the American history, in this place. Little did we know, but we woke up that first morning of our move in the true birthplace of the United States of America. Therefore, this only added to my intrigue.

Could our family have ties to Jamestown or to the battle of Yorktown in the American Revolutionary War? Just the thought seemed incredible to me. It was also the very thing that made me want to do more research.

"That's quite the surprise. So, no one knew we have been here in the States that long?" I asked as I searched online.

"It is a surprise. We had no idea." Granny sounded as excited about the prospect as I did.

"Huh. It looks like he was in Norfolk, which is about forty-five miles south and across the water and tunnel from here. It's where the Naval Yard is located. From what I can see, he was born there and died there."

"That is close, isn't it?"

It is... It looks like I need time to do some more research. How much has she gotten done with the tree?"

"Some, but not a great deal."

"Well, Granny... give me some time and will let you know what I discover."

That was all it took. I became obsessive over the next two weeks in order to get the most for the free access I had during that time and I bought one month of a subscription thereafter.

Sure enough. We had family members as Yorktown in the American Revolutionary War and at Jamestown a stand at last count, we had sixty-five members of our family executed at the Tower of London. Never mind the U.S. presidents and signers of the Declaration of Independence. There, also, have been numerous kings, queens, and emperors from several countries. All of which are interesting, but it's the lives of the more simple folk I tend to be most interested in. Who were they, what did they do, what was their life like, and what was their faith? It makes me quite curious.

It's the history I can learn from that also makes me even more intrigued. I cannot wait to explore American History through the eyes of my ancestors. It makes history real and come alive for me. And I hope it does the same for you.

WAS THE USA STARTED AS A CHRISTIAN NATION?

This is a question we will address as we learn the history of the USA from the history books and from my family tree.

REMEMBERED

Every person has thousands of stories over their life. I wish I had time to tell several stories of each individual so we could do what should be done. Every person has lived. Hence, they should be remembered. Granted, from some stories we can learn what to do from but from others, we can learn what to do. But, they should be remembered nonetheless. The more stories that are remembered, the more we learn the truth about history and what really happened and why.

Let's look back and see what brought the United States of America into existence, why, and how, and see what we can learn from and apply today.

Let's learn the stories and remember.

Three cousins make it their dream to explore the world. Their dream morphed into starting a new colony in America. Raleigh, Grenville, and Arundell see it happen as Stafford seeks asylum. This is the story of a dream and the lives of four men, their women, and family. 

This story is about Roanoke (in what would later be called Virginia) 1584-1590.

The Family Treez of the USA Series is a saga of a real-life, American, Christian family traced from about 1388 to today. 

Every family tree intersects--and has a destiny, a story to tell, and a purpose. every person, family, and lineage.

The Writing of Roanoke 1584-1590 (News and Info)

Status of Roanoke 1584-1590: The Family Treez of the USA Series, Book 1: 

Writing. (Not planning, plotting, editing, or final publishing.)

Word Count: 6665 of 210,000 words (I started writing this book on 17 September 2012, Monday.)

Word Count Goal for 19 Sep. 2012: 5000 words

So, I am ahead with my writing. So far. (Whew.)

The Writing of This Book

There is something magical about going to a time different than our own. I do not care if it is time-traveling to the past or future. It is a different era and that brings a touch of imagination. Writing ROANOKE 1584-1590: The Family Treez of the USA Series, Book 1 is magical as well. But, it is also mind-boggling.

When I think that I am writing about actual family, it is pretty difficult to fully grasp. It makes the history take on a deeper meaning.

Then, to think of my patriotism and love of the United states of America, then add this lens of family history, and I am even more patriotic. I was patriotic before I learned about my family. Quite, actually. But, add the family dimension and it has grown a million-fold. 

I cannot look at anything in this country without feeling even more passionate than previously.

Writing this book has kindled even more of a passion for this great nation.

It has also added to a passion of history. I still cannot believe how little of a passion I had for history prior to moving here to Virginia. History was always my weakest subjects in school. My father sure tried to make me informed, though. He was successful in that endeavor. I learned far more about history from him than I did in all my 20 years of schooling combined. But, it was here in Virginia, in July 2011 that kindled my passion for U.S. history. To walk where America was founded, here in this part of Virginia, is humbling. Mind-boggling. Remarkable. Touching. Meaningful. To know that just up the street, so to speak, was where Cornwallis had Gates surrender to George Washington in the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War... To think that, sure, there were smaller battles after that for the next couple of years, but it was at Yorktown that we turned the tide of the war, is amazing. And, I had a family member who was a Colonel who was there at the surrender--at Surrender Field... It blows me away.

Therefore, knowing about my family history makes me more passionate about, well, all of it--and surely writing about it.

I have always loved to play the "Imagine Game," where I imagine what it was like to be these historical figures, doing what they did, at the time they did, and what they experienced, thought, and felt. Writing this book on Roanoke is no different. Except, it is personal as well as part of my patriotic act.

I want to write my family's story to help all of us learn about the true history of the United States of America, without even realizing it. That is my goal for this series. 

Can you imagine? I am sure trying. Hence, I write. 

Can You Imagine?

The story I am writing about Roanoke is about what happened before, during, and after the voyages to Roanoke. It's about the colony that was not lost and the colony that was. I am trying, and will try, to delve far more than any other book, about what it was like to be those who planned for the establishment of the first permanent English colony in North America--and what they went through with the great expectations before going to Roanoke, then finding out about the troubles of the colony, and not being able to get to the colony for three years. Then, when they got there, they discovered the colony was lost. There was no trace of them. Then, because of a storm, having to leave before you can do more of a search... Can you imagine? 

That is what this book is about.

It is the story of three men who dreamed of Roanoke, their families, and the temporarily lost dream. It's about how they got out of bed, and continuing with life, in the morning knowing about the lost colony. 

Can you imagine? I am sure trying. Hence, I write. 

And, what a story it is to tell!

Plan for the Family Treez of the USA Series

I have been working on planning for more of the books in this series.

 

I have a great deal family here in America since 1585. Future stories will talk about this. However, I realize that I have had several members in the American Revolutionary War and in the Civil War. Never mind all of the other wars. I also can trace my family line back to the Plantagenet and Tudor bloodlines in England and France. I come from a line of several famous and infamous Kings and Queens. But, it is the fact that I have had over 23 members of my family beheaded or executed in England that I find most interesting. (How is that for a claim?!?)  

 

Each of these periods of time begs the questions: Why America? Why now? What was life like? How did their faith shape them as people and as Americans? (Or, add England for the other family members.)

 

Therefore, here is my plan for the enxt couple of years. I will write a book from each of these times frames in the following order:

~ Jamestown

~ American Revolutionary War

~ Civil War

~ England (Tower Series)

 

Hopefully, I will write 2 books from each segment each year. This is my goal. (We shall see.)

 

In other words, if you do not prefer the period of time a book is set in, wait for the enxt, and it will change. But, read all of them, and get a glimpse of an American family with English roots.

An Interesting Fact

Where was the first permanent English colony in America?

I must admit that before I moved to Virginia, I would have given the wrong answer. 

Was it Plymouth, Massachusettes or Jamestown, Virginia?

The correct answer is Jamestown.

Jamestown is the real birthplace of the United States of America.

Book 1

I guess it is about time I told you about Book 1 of the Family Treez of the USA Series. At this point, I must admit I am not sure of the title. I am calling it , A JAMESTOWN LIFE, today. But, who knows if it will stick. I sure do not know at this point. I am rather undecided at this point, I must admit. Here is what I am sure of, though:

Book 1 is about a married couple, Francis and Mary Mason, who make the decision to pick up their lives and move to Jamestown in America in 1613, along with their three year old daughter. They move from Norfolk, England. 

Can you imagine taking a trip for two to three months across the ocean to go to the place near the Lost Colony of Roanoke, known for the Starving Time and massacres by the natives?

There were few women and children as well at the time at Jamestown and in the surrounding areas.

I cannot imagine any of that, never mind the stress it would put on a marriage.

Welcome to Book 1 of the FAMILY TREEZ OF THE USA SERIES. 

It is about a real, Christian, American family. It is based off of my family. 

And I currently live just fifteen minutes from Jamestown and live in Hampton, where they settled. I did not know any of this until a couple of months ago. My husband and I moved to Virginia about 13 months ago. So, I have a really good idea of the setting. 

The Masons were not the only family to come to Jamestown. There were also the Tuckers, Arundells, Sherwoods, and Williamsons. This is a little foreshadowing for you and a little teaser of what is to come. Never mind a real-life mail order bride. 

See. I peaked your interest now, did I not?

BY THE WAY: The photo above is one I took of Jamestown a few months ago. This is at the archaeological dig. This is where the United States of America began and is where my ancestors tread. (Humbling. Amazing. Awe-inspiring. Mind-boggling.)

Rootz (Roots)

Let me be honest. My family tree did not mean that much to me until June 2012. However, when I discovered I had a minimum of 22 family members land, settle, or be born in Jamestown, Virginia between 1585 and 1640, my heritage and lineage took on a whole new meaning.

Part of the reason why my family tree was not that important to me was because I am proud to be an American. I might be 50% German, 25% Swedish, and 8.33% English, 8.33% Irish, and 8.33% Scottish, but I am 100% American. Ask me to define who I am, 'American' is one of the things I will say. It is more than a place where I was born and raised. The United States of America is the best country on the planet: One Nation Under God--with the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution. With the world's greatest military. The U.S. means something to me. Deeply. Powerfully.

Therefore, when I moved to Virginia, the meaning of patriotism and American pride has taken on a whole new meaning. Virginia is America's birthplace. It is where we landed first and is where the final deciding battle of the American Revolutionary War took place. Surrender Field is 15 minutes from my house! Jamestown, where I had several family members take impacted by the Jamestown Massacre, is less than thirty minutes from my house. This means something. This is the United States and all her glory!

U.S. History has come alive in a fresh, bold way.

Then, to learn about my family tree... It has only cemented everything I just wrote a million times over. It's several exclamation points and underlines.

Roots have come to mean something more to me.

I am proud my family was here literally from the beginning and has fought in every war the United States of America has seen. This is what the Family Treez Historical Fiction Series is about and is why I am writing it. I hope that it will help you to learn more about our great nation--as you enjoy a work of fiction which makes it feel less like a history book.

Information about book, ELIZABETH

Elizabeth, along with the other books in this series, is a saga about a real-life American family. The story traces the lives of the Arundells from England to moving to America and what they encounter along the way. It's a story of love, ambition, trials, and life-transitions. This is a book and series of American Historical Fiction based loosely on a real-life family, the author's own family.
Elizabeth was married into the family, but that is what gives her a unique perspective on the Arundells. She went from rags to riches, and then followed her man, Peter, to travel across the Atlantic and go to Virginia in 16??, along with their three children. The book, Elizabeth, is about what they experience and how they are forever changed because of their travels and time in Virginia in Buckroe.
The Arundells, and other relatives, have fought in every war since their first landing at Jamestown Settlement and continues today. The series starts in 1597, but takes a look back to when their relative, John Arundell first goes to Roanoke with Sir Richard Grenville, his half-brother.

It was in Virginia that was the first permanent English settlement, but in Yorktown was where the nation was fought for and won in the last decisive battle of the American Revolutionary War. Would you believe?

A year ago, my husband and I moved to Virginia. We live in the Hampton/Newport News area. We are within a half hour's drive to Jamestown, Yorktown, or Williamsburg (aka the Historical Triangle).

Would you believe that up until a year ago, history was fascinating to me, but I was terrible with my knowledge of it? In fact, history was my weakest subject in school. For instance, I thought the first permanent English settlement was at Plymouth, Massachusetts. Now I know the error of my education. Jamestown is the correct answer, if you wanted to know.

Then again, I come from an era, in my schools at least, we studied the explorers every year. And I mean every year. We never made it to the 20th Century, so I could not see how the events of the past were linked with what happened today--and the implications from the past to today are gigantic and mighty. But, school never taught me this. My father did, however. (Thank God for him. Everything I know about history is because of him.)

I also did not read history books because I found them boring. Would you believe?

Sure, I got into historical fiction. But, that could hardly be counted as history, could it? (Hah! I see the error in my thinking now.)

I fell in the love with the history of Virginia, needless to say. Wow, that changed the moment we got to Virginia and the historical sites were able to win my love and passion, like a lover, in seconds. It was love at first sight.

I will visit Virginia for the rest of my life before I visit Washington D. C. The politicians might tell you the importance of the city. Sure, there are monuments and museums which are critical to the history and recognition of our great nation. I will not dispute that. Instead, I will visit D.C. Every 10 or 15 years. Virginia, however, I see visiting every 5. (We do not know if my husband's work will keep us here another year or two. But, we realize we have to plan for it only be one more just in case.) Virginia is where the United States of America was really founded.

Now, here is the best part. Would you believe that I had NO idea about my family tree, genealogy, or lineage until about two months ago? This knowledge has only added to my love affair with this part of the country and in Virginia.

So, how is all of that for a confession?

Changes and New Book: Elizabeth

I am afraid some changes have occurred. I just deleted the book, American Origins, and am starting again.

I am still doing Camp NaNoWriMo and will have to write a lot more each day to accomplish the feat. (2700 words--opposed to 2,000)

So, why am I changing the book? I realize that the Plantagenet and Tudor side of my family is fascinating, I want to deal with the American journey and the direct American relatives as a series of historical fiction.

I am sorry for the change, but I think you will be a great deal more satisfied with this change.

The new book is called: "Elizabeth."

It is of the:

Arundell Family Treez of the USA Series, Book #1

I will put this on Smashwords and in my store there as soon as possible. My guess is in the next couple of days.

The Historic Triangle

Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg are part of the Historic Triangle today. All three are in Virginia and are connected by the Colonial Parkway.

Starting in Jamestown

The book, AMERICAN ROOTS 1585-1607 takes place mainly in Jamestown, Virginia. But, it starts in Roanoke, the Lost Colony of Virginia and the first attempt of making a permanent English settlement in America, the New World.

Jamestown is the first permanent English Settlement in the United States of America. It dates prior to Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Hence, Jamestown is the birthplace of the U.S.
