STORIES OF BLESSING #4

THE DEFINITION OF BLESSING

Look at the definition of blessing from Dictionary.com:

It's rather interesting.

HOW DO YOU WRITE YOUR STORY OF BLESSING?:
A HOW-TO, TIP, HINT, SUGGESTION, TEACHING MOMENT

Written 2014-10-17 12:24:05, Friday

I recommend my starting with a list. Count your blessings in list form. Write as much with each bullet/point in the list. Start with one sentence each and then grow to four sentences each. Do this every day for a week. Then:

Once you get a good and sizable list started, pick one of those memories, or another that pops into your mind, and write a 100 word story of blessing. Do this every day for a week. Keep adding to your blessings list as well. Then:

Write a 200 word story regarding a blessing you want to count. Do this every day for a week. Keep adding to your blessings list as well. Then:

Write a 300 word story regarding a blessing you want to count. Do this every day for a week. Keep adding to your blessings list as well. Then:

Keep doing this until you are up to the word count you feel most content with. Add 100 words per week per story until your each the desired number count. I would say try to do a 1,000 word (max) story at least once a week, though. Ideally, though, in time, you'll do at least three per week. Do most of your stories of blessing, though, the word count you prefer.

Why do all of this?
1 To count your blessings
2 Leave a legacy
3 Remember what has happened in your life
4 It brings a proper perspective
5 It helps improve your health (this is a scientific fact)
6 You can encourage and inspire others
7 You will live a better life if you do, one of more contentment and purposeful living
8 Why not?

CAN YOU AND DO YOU COUNT THE STORMS AND CHALLENGES OF LIFE AS A BLESSING?

A Tip, Suggestion, Hint, How-To, and Prompt

Written 2014-10-17 11:56:33, Friday

Think of the really tough stuff in your life. Think of the storms and challenges you've experienced. Think of the things you would prefer not to think about.

Just wait. I know that it's painful to think about, but there is a reason for my madness and for this suggestion.

Think about all of those things and try to find three blessings or more from each experience.

Why? Finding the blessing of each puts you in control of the situation for starters. You are able to take control of the situation so the situation no longer takes control of you.

Also, finding the blessings finds the good out of a tough situation. Finding the good always outweighs the bad. So, shift the scales. The more good you can find, the more blessing, and count it, the more good will come out of the tough situation and will conquer the bad.

Finding the blessing shows growth. You never want a situation to make you regress. You want to learn from each situation and make it count for something.

At first, trying to come up with one blessing might be difficult. However, keep thinking on it. Find a blessing from each experience--and make sure to write it down. Count it as a blessing. Be very intentional. Keep thinking on each experience until you can come up with a minimum of three blessings from each.

If you were to do this, and really do it, you would be surprised at the result.

I've discovered through my life that the biggest and most blessings have come out of a time of storm. They are the very things that have shaped who I am, what I stand for, and what I want to be. Every challenge has made me better. And, every time I've conquered a time of storm with counting my blessings (at the time and later), it's become a favorite memory--for I was challenged and morphed it into something to be thankful for.

Give it a try. I guarantee you'll be deeply blessed.

Count your blessings and turn them into stories of blessing. You'll bless others in the process.

WHAT STORIES OF BLESSING SHOULD YOU WRITE AND SHARE?

All of them is the answer.

However, share whatever you feel most comfortable with. Also, don't forget, you can change the details in order to keep some secrecy--or you can even use your name as 'anonymous' and your place of residence can be 'earth.'

Seriously, though. Every blessing in your life, every story of blessing, matters. All of them.

A blessing is a special favor you are given that you do not deserve. But, you received it anyway. Do you hear the true blessing it is? You were given a gift you didn't expect or deserve. Take stock. Count them. Don't let them pass by without acknowledging them. After all, there is so much in this life we shouldn't acknowledge and do, each blessing is that much more important to observe and remember.

Share all of your stories of blessing, or just a few. The choice is up to you.

THE GODLY BLESSING

Written 2014-10-17 13:51:10, Friday

The blessings we are talking about on this blog are the blessings given to us by God. He may use people, places, things, or events to do so, but it's still God giving us the blessing, the special favor. And, we are to count each blessing and show our reverence of God. Counting our blessings makes us realize, with awe, what God has done, is doing, and will do.

Our counting of blessings is taking noticed of what God has done in our lives, through our lives, and around our lives. It's acknowledging God.

-------------

DAY 1 OF 365 DAYS OF COUNTING YOUR BLESSINGS (AND WRITING YOUR STORIES OF BLESSING)

Think of three blessings from last week and write them down in a list.

Then, turn them into a story of blessing of whatever length you would prefer, but at least 100 words.

STORIES OF BLESSING #3

THE THANKSGIVING CHALLENGE:
PLEASE JOIN US IN THIS CHALLENGE

Written 2014-10-17 10:26:56, Friday

I want to issue you a challenge. Let's call it THE THANKSGIVING CHALLENGE.

What is this challenge? You might wonder. It's what you might think from the name of the challenge and from the name and purpose of this Stories of Blessing blog (and soon to be blog book).

My calculations say Thanksgiving is in 40 days. So...

Here's the Thanksgiving Challenge: See how many blessings you can count, and stories of blessing, you can write between now and Thanksgiving. Make it a minimum of three per day.

40 days x 3 blessings minimum per day = 120 total minimum blessings counted

I think this would be quite amazing, don't you?

What about asking it of everyone who you are close to and share it during Thanksgiving or the week after Thanksgiving with one another?

What about sharing at least one per day on this blog so this blog can be full of that many more blessings we can all share in and enjoy?

Are you up for it? Want to take this Thanksgiving Challenge?

If so, would you please attach a comment at the end of any blog post and let us know. And, we can also have a discussion, if you want, about blessings and counting our blessings. This blog is meant to be a community as well, to encourage, inspire, and build up one another.

Have a blessed day!

BOOK PUBLISHING PLAN FOR THESE BLOG POSTS AND STORIES OF BLESSING

Every 400 pages of blog post material, I will turn these stories into a book. (I will publish these blog posts, in other words.)

My guess is every two and a half months or so at this point is how often the blog posts will be turned into a book. The material will be of any story of blessing anyone shares on the blog, plus the material I've written.

In time, I hope that themes will start to develop, so I can also turn these blog post stories of blessing into theme books (for example: Prayer, Faith,  Life's Storms, etc.).

I will also do a "Best Stories of the Year" for 400 pages of the blog posts that got the most hits (people looking at it).

For now, I will make the title a fancy one (sarcasm), which all subsequent books will follow:

Working Title:

Stories of Blessing #1
(A Collection for Encouragement and Inspiration)

Of course, they can be read in any order. You won't need to start with book 1.

I will also do a paperback version as well as a e-book version of each book.

While I am editing the material, before I publish the books, I will have a free edition you can find online. Details will come soon.

So, stay tuned.

THE BLESSING OF A OFFICEMATES

Written 2014-10-16 13:00:34, Thursday

The writing life can be a lonely one. It means working alone for hours on end, day in and day out.

I have had a faithful and loyal companion, who has been in my office or study, with me day in and day out since I became a full-time writer (June 2009) (a blessing). And, even before that. It's my elderly Beagle, Zack. He turns 15 in January 2015 (another blessing).

He is the most patient companion. I cannot tell you how many stories I've read to him--and he's listened to all of them. Or, at least I assume through the snores he heard it and was really enthralled and not bored out of his mind. He's always there.

My other cat, Sinan the Maine Coon and orange fluffball, has not been nearly as faithful or as patient--as far as my writing. He doesn't hang out with me too often as I write. He does from time to time, but not like Zack. Zack is with me ten hours a day or more as I peck at the keyboard.

I also have Shelly aquatic turtle in my study. She can be the most demanding for attention at times. Turtles are so social! She knows to splash if she wants my attention. She will splash until she gets it. I hear it, look up, and see water splashing OVER the sides of the tank. And, there's about fourteen inches of tank above the water. so, if the splashing goes over the sides, that should tell you how crazy she is when she wants affection.

Now that Kara is my study, I don't just have one officemate, I have three.

Now that I can keep the door open and Zack can come and go if he desires--and he usually does and follows me, Kara just stays on my desk. She's never ventured out of the study except once--and that was yesterday. Yesterday and today have been the first time I can keep the study door open, so I've been able to work in my study all day long--without having to divide my time between Zack and Sinan in the family room and Kara in the study. (A blessing.)

I am so thankful for my three new office companions. (Even though one, Kara girl, is rearranging my desk as we speak because she's pushing on stuff with her four paws. Evidently the stuff got in her way. Poor thing. Now, she's rubbing her face and scent marking my tablet and its stand--getting fur all over my keyboard. Precious.)

Animals are proof fancy words aren't needed most of the time. In fact, any kind of words aren't even needed. Rather, presence is so meaningful.

When my husband and I make our Historic Jamestowne run every month or more, we often don't say much. We don't need to. Just being together is the biggest blessing.

And, how many times have you gone through a hard time and someone, well-meaning, will say something stupid and it can be hurtful, infuriating, or disrespectful? If they would just say, "I have no idea what to say. But, I'm here. If you need anything, just ask." That would be far more beneficial.

Critters show this firsthand how helpful a mostly silent presence is--and how healing.

My officemates and companions do mean for writer's block at times, when I can't get something done because they want affection, need something, or because they are being so cute I have to stop what I'm doing and take a few photos.

Thank God for office mates and critter companions--and for those we can be quiet with--and just hang and enjoy one another's presence. Life would sure be ugly and dull if not for them.

BLESSINGS LIST BY ELLEN OF DENVER

Taking a much needed shower thanking the good Lord that I have hot water and getting out of shower, Molly (my cat) is sitting on floor making sure that I was OK, then realizing I was out.

When we don't have what is needed and making do with what we have.

While applying for a job and getting one response after responding to many.

Afternoon Blessings:

Trying to take a nap and my Molly lays down next to me on sofa.  It doesn't last long but it was those few moments that I cherish.

Looking around my home and thanking mom for giving me this roof over head so I need not worry about where I'd live.

Looking out window with sunshine pouring in.  What a beautiful afternoon.

Waiting until 4:15 to get mail. Not only mine, but my dear neighbor C's, whom I help because she is unable to do.  Bringing her, her mail loving her beautiful smile and just hearing her say, thank you.

THE BLESSING OF COUNTING MY BLESSINGS

Written 2014-10-16 14:10:35, Thursday and 2014-10-17 07:54:24, Friday

A year ago, when God closed the door on something in B's and my life, I started to learn the value of counting my blessings. This is even more true regarding the times I don't feel like it. Counting My blessings gets the focus off of me, and my challenges or storms, and redirects my thoughts to the reality of the situation. The reality is, though this time might be rocky for whatever reason, life overall, when I look past the immediate bumps, is full of blessing.

Counting my blessings has changed me and my life. I have not had the same perspective on anything since I started this practice. How could I?

I've also learned it's okay to be a thief. If I see the blessings in someone else's life, I count it as a blessing, for I was able to see the blessing. A blessing doesn't have to directly impact me. A blessing is a blessing. And, a blessing is special favor we don't deserve, but we are given it anyway.

I've also learned how in every moment, there are several blessings, no matter the moment. All we need to do is look for them.

Another lesson about blessings I've learned is to count my blessings in each moment, but also in hindsight for the same moment. It amazes me how later I find even more blessings in that moment.

A blessing is anything or anyone we can be grateful and thankful for in every moment.

Life has storms and challenges. Sure. But, within those, blessings abound. All we need to do is open our eyes, look for them, and count them.

Life is full of blessings.

TURNING NOT-FEELING-IT TO BLESSINGS COUNTED

Written 2014-10-17 09:26:51, Friday

I got another poor night's sleep last night, the forth or fifth in a row, so I am tired, cranky, and have quite the tired headache. Also, I've been dealing with back pain and fighting a cold for days now as well. So, I will not lie. I do not feel like counting my blessings, thank you very much.

As a matter of fact, when I see the blog title of, Stories of Blessing, I want to stick my tongue out. I'm just not feeling it.

But, this is where I'm glad for maturity and wisdom. Just like on the days I don't want to work out, I know when I do, it's usually the best workout I have in a long time. It's the same way with counting my blessings. Experience has proven this true more times than I can think. I know today of all days, since I'm just not feeling it, it's even more imperative for me to do.

I might not write 1,000 word stories of my blessings, or I just might when I get started, but I will still see how many blessings in my life I can indeed count.

As a matter of fact, if I make a list of every blessing I can think of, it will give me an outline of bullet points I can expand into a longer story of blessing. So, this is how I will start today.

It's a blessing to be older, wiser, and have some experience under my belt. Today, of all days, I just want to do pretty much anything else than count my blessings or workout, but today, I will do both. Today will be one gigantic dynamic of blessing then. I just need to do it and wait and see.

Counting my blessings is really the wisest thing for me to do when I feel so yucky and crabby. Hence, I shall.

Counting My Blessings By Ellen of Denver

Due to lack of sleep had worse pain shooting down my shoulder and arm,  don't know why so on this Friday I ask...

We take too much for granted,  but they are blessings.

Such as:  morning coffee savoring every sip.  Breakfast,  whatever we eat it feels so good to have a full tummy. Going to work,  we have wheels to get us where we need to go.  Leave earlier so we don't need to rush.

I say these things because it's those little things that are my blessings.

Walking down hall to kitchen turning on coffee maker.

Molly, my kitty, so excited the alarm going off and following me everywhere as she wants love. I give her love and feeling her contentment I smile with such fulfillment on what just took place. Blessing indeed!

Getting ready for my job interview and knowing there's nothing more I can do to prepare.  I give it to God.  He knows what's best for me.

I feel so blessed!

PERSONAL BLESSINGS COUNTED LIST ON OCTOBER 17, 2014

Written 2014-10-17 10:51:37, Friday

This is also my start of the Thanksgiving Challenge.

Thank God it's Friday.

I'm excited for this Thanksgiving Challenge. I want to see how many blessings I can count each day between now and then. Even if it's just a bullet list, like this one. It's from the bullet lists that I will expand each into a Story of Blessing. This will give me a good outline to work from and this is rather exciting to think. I will try to think of blessings from my past, present, and future to count each day. (What a blessing this will be.)

Getting greeted by my critters first thing in the morning.

The first sip of coffee each morning.

How much I've grown over the past year to even know to be even more conscious about counting my blessings when I don't feel like it.

The decision B and I made on Monday. It was not one we ever expected we would make.

The sound of the water filter of Shelly aquatic turtle's tank. It's so relaxing. And, watching her swim is so serene. (Hah! Two blessings in one! Score!)

Watching Kara sleep on my desk in front of me. The beauty of God's creation just staggers me.

The fresh air coming in the window to my left. It's slightly crisp, smells good, and feels good as it hits my left side.

Sinan just got up in said window to smell. He's such a gorgeous cat.

Last night, B and I spun out mattress and, thankfully, I think I've discovered the source of my back pain. I feel a great deal better today. Whew. (Two blessings in one again.)

I had a headache earlier from a lack of sleep and took some children's chewable aspirin. I also took a shower. One or both relieved the headache, thankfully.

The sun is out in full force and is stunning.

It's not too warm of a day.

I hear a helicopter flying. It's of the military variety. What a blessing to hear. The sound of freedom is a major blessing--as well as those in the military and the ones in the helicopter. I am grateful for what they do--and have done.

Again, we have not heard of a new case of Ebola diagnosed here in the USA. This is most certainly a blessing.

Adding chocolate syrup to coffee to give it an extra kick (for me, the sugar free variety).

It's Fall. This is by far my most favorite season.

Sinan has been in the study with Kara on my desk, for over five minutes, and neither cat has hissed. This is a blessing.

The weekend starts tomorrow.

A nice shampoo and conditioner to make my hair soft and silky. Healthy. Manageable.

The sound of a purring cat.

A door to shut when one cat gets too upset. (I think that's the best word to use here.)

Learning from how my dog, cats, and turtles look at me--that's how I would look at the Lord.

Penzu--for keeping all of my blessings permanently. It's my online journaling and is where I save everything that has meaning or value in my life. It's truly God-sent and is a major, major, blessing. (I also like how if I ever chose to go back to the free version, it would still have all of my journaling. It would also keep all of my tabs.)

I'm excited to see what happens in the next year with B and me. We know that B will retire from his first job of almost three decades. Then, he will start phase 2 in our lives--where he has another job. Doing the same thing. Just in another capacity. Also, I will then start to volunteer at the hospice and nursing home and help collect the Stories of Blessing in the lives of those people. I will listen to their stories and write them down for them and their family and friends. Focusing on times of blessing will help their quality of life. Also, what a huge honor it would be to hear their stories. For those who want their legacy of blessing shared, I will add them to this blog, so we can learn from their wisdom.

What I just shared will be a new beginning. It will be a time of transformation and transion, but quite the blessing.

B and I will move to another city or state to do so and we are excited to see where we end up--it will be where the job takes us.

B and I will buy our first house together. Oh, how exciting!

The wag of a dog's tail.

The irregular beat of a cat's tail.

Freedom. What a major blessing.

The United States of America is another blessing.

Elections, just around the corner, are a blessing.

My mom.

My dad.

My Granny.

My aunts, uncles, and cousins.

My friends.

My faith.

My salvation.

Being able to count my blessings.

Email.

Leftover roasted chicken.

A good book.

I could go on. And will later.

GIVE THANKS IN EVERYTHING AND FOR EVERYTHING: A BIBLICAL THANKSGIVING CHALLENGE

Written 2014-10-17 11:43:22, Friday

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 and in Philippians 4:4-7, we learn that we are to give thanks for everything, in everything, and at all times, every single day and night. This is the original Thanksgiving Challenge.

The question is: Do we do this?

If we do not give thanks day and night, for and in all things, we can learn to do so. This blog will help with that and doing the Thanksgiving Challenge will help. In fact, taking the Thanksgiving Challenge for every day for the rest of your life will bring these verses to fulfillment in your life.

Just a thought and a reminder.

The more we count our blessings, the more thankful we will be, and the more blessings we will find to be thankful for. What a blessed cycle.

STORIES OF BLESSING #2

BLOG POST TIME

I will post the latest edition of Stories of Blessing each day, at least Monday through Friday, at Noon (12:00 p.m.) Eastern Standard Time. Therefore, stay tuned.

-------------

PLEASE SEND ME YOUR STORIES OF BLESSING

I would love to hear and share your stories of blessing on this blog. It would be a blessing to all of us. After all, your stories matter.

What blessings have you had, do you have, and will you have, in your life? Or, someone you know.

Writing/Sharing Your Story Tip: It can be a 1-liner. It does not have to be ellaborate. I recommend at least four sentences, though, so we as readers can share more in your blessing. The four sentences can each be short, though.

How do you share your story? Look on the left side of this blog for directions.

THE LAYOUT AND APPEARANCE OF THIS BLOG

My PC died a couple of weeks ago and I've been waiting for its replacement to arrive. Therefore, I apologize the layout and appearance of this blog are not exactly what I prefer. When I get my new computer, I will have the ability to do more than I can with my tablet. I do most of my writing on my tablet, and love it, but it does have some shortcomings and this is one of them. (Sigh.)

Thank you for your patience with this endeavor.

WE WERE ADOPTED

Written 2014-10-14 19:21:15, Tuesday and 2014-10-15 10:44:20, Wednesday

One evening, about a month ago and in late September, my husband and I were headed to dinner in my car, which sat out front. B remembered he needed to grab something out of our detached garage toward the back of our house. So, he headed to the garage and when I grabbed my bag, I headed to my car and waited for him.

A few minutes later, I decided to go and investigate to see where B was and what had him sidetracked. About the time I made the turn from the front of the house toward the garage, B headed my way and gestured with his hand for me to follow him. I picked up my pace and he told me, "You need to see what I found--or maybe I should say who."

I knew right then and there we might be in trouble because of his tone. It wasn't his, "You need to see this insect" tone, but was his, "I found a critter to fall for" tone. Oh, dear.

B and I are both animal lovers. If it is alive, we're mesmerized by it. Animals show the glory of God the creator and we're always in awe of animals.

We are the 'pull over on the side of the road to see a deer and get several photos of it' type couple. We're the ones who see the critters of this world when no one else does. For instance, I cannot tell you how many times we've gone to Virginia Beach and watched the dolphins while the hundreds in the water and on shore do not see the dolphins. We're the ones who also will see the tree hugging raccoon when everyone else is rushing by and miss him. And, he's maybe five feet off the sidewalk in a tree.

Never mind how we have Noah's Ark in our house as it is--of a beagle, cat, and two aquatic turtles. Our cat was a rescued feral kitten. He and his littermates were on the railroad tracks.

When we got to the garage, a black and white kitty was there. I started to call out to it, but B said, "I think she's deaf. You know how we open the garage door from inside the house. Well, the cat was in there, exploring. I hollered out and it didn't hear me. I walked up to it as was able to nudge it's tail with my shoe--just in case it felt threatened--and didn't want to get too close. Instead, I was headbutted and it purred like crazy. It's a sweet thing."

Sure enough, it was. The cat was starving for food and affection.

Over the next few days, we fed it, gave it water, and figured out it was a female and she didn't have claws on her front feet. Never mind how she was quite malnourished and was thinner than thin. Needless to say, we knew she would never survive in the wild, particularly with cold weather approaching. So, we took out our vehicles and put her in the garage and worked on socializing her with us, which was quite easy. We even took her to the vet. She got all of her shots (poor thing) and was given a clean bill of health--other than some tooth issues and will require an operation.

So, Kara's been in my study for nearly two weeks now. We are slowly, and boy do I mean slowly, getting her and our beagle and cat acquainted. It will be slow in coming, but it will happen.

It's been a major blessing watching the feral cat, who didn't stand a chance of survival, become an indoor cat. She loves being inside. Kara knows she is safe and has all the food and water she could ever want and all of the love. She has a whole new life and is thriving.

We've loved being a blessing to her, but she has also been a blessing to us. How can something so small be such a major thief--of hearts?

It's also amazing how something so small could be such a major blessing.

THE BLESSING OF FAMILY DURING A TIME OF DIFFICULT DECISIONS

Written 2014-10-16 06:55:46, Thursday

I am so blessed to have the family I have. This is something I've known all of my life. However, there are some times it stands out more than others.

I've told three of my family members of a hard choice my husband, B, and I made in our lives. It's been a difficult decision to say the least. It's a decision that impacts all of them, not just us. (Our marriage is solid and thriving, let me add. So, it's not regarding that.) The three family members knew it how difficult this was for us, and how it's been one of tears and has been a punch in the gut, and they reacted as I imagined. Our news didn't upset them. They realized it was our choice, but it was a difficult one. They were completely supportive. (Whew and thank God. What a blessing!)

Granted, if they weren't, it would have made it harder, but the decision is the right one for B and I. They put on their tough faces for me, so to speak. Bless them.

I'm sure they feel like B and I. Shocked, but not. Sad, but not.

This has been years in the making.

My family's reaction has been a relief. It makes me sad they have to go through this, too, but I think we are all excited to see what happens through this decision. This is another blessing.

God will turn this into something wonderful. We have no doubt. What a blessing.

The journey of life is never easy. Moreover, nothing in my life has gone according to plan. Not once. Nor has anything been fair. And, I say thank God for all of these things. While I go through it, it is challenging, but I also know how eventually hindsight will show me how things work out, not just for the better, but for the best, if I just keep the faith. It's my family, and life experience, that has taught me this. Again, what a blessing.

Because of my family's reaction, B and I are freed to do what God wants us to do, and they will gladly join us for the ride. (A blessing that brings tears to my eyes. Thank God.)

A RECOMMENDATION ANYONE WHO WANTS TO WRITE THEIR OWN STORIES OF BLESSING: A HOW-TO

If you are thinking about writing one story of blessing, or many, I promised to write some blog posts on how to do so. Well, here is the first one.

So, you've made the decision. You want to count your life blessings and write your stories of blessing.

Let me share a secret with you: It doesn't have to be perfect writing, grammar, or anything like that.

Pretend someone is sitting in front of you and tell them your story. As you do, either record it and type it out later or type it out as you go.

That's it. It's really that simple. But, where or how should you write or type it out? Read this:

Penzu Online Journal Coupon

Do you want to write your stories of blessing and keep them permanently? I recommend using Penzu for this purpose. Here is a link for a coupon:

Penzu is how I do all of my journaling. It's how I save all of my stories of blessing.

You can do the free version, which is wonderful. I definitely recommend it.

Or, you can do a $19 per year version. It's a little fancier and offers more options. If you use the above link, you get a discount off that price. If you are serious about keeping your legacy of blessings, and want to write as many as possible, this is what I would recommend.

I've journaled for well over three decades and Penzu is easy to use and is the best journal out there.

A CHRISTIAN AND BIBLICAL BLESSING: PERSPECTIVE, FOCUS, CLARITY

Written 2014-10-16 08:31:33, Thursday

Every morning, I like to read the Bible, the Word of God, and find a verse or several verses I want to meditate on, think about, ponder, and pray about all day and night long. (Granted, sometimes I'm more successful than others with the all day and night part, than others.)

Why do I do this?

I want to start my blank slate and opportunity of the new day, the morning, with perspective, focus, clarity, or whatever you want to call it. This gives me direction and something positive and purposeful to focus on this day.

I am a firm believer of garbage in, garbage out. Hence, I try to put healthy, eternal focused things into my mind, not earthly garbage. This is why I do the morning search for a focal verse, a variety of verses, or passage.

What a blessing it's been.

Every single time I do this, and try to look at these verse(s) at least three times each day, it pays off in great dividends for me. It's never wasted. My day ends up being one that's purposeful--and not one that's just lived and at the end of the day I wonder what I really accomplished that helped my soul.

The following verse is one I've used since 1997 from time to time. This is the Verse of the Day for http://BibleGateway.com:

Psalm 19:14 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

14 May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to You,
Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.

Talk about a blessing. If I were to focus on this verse day in and day out, what would my life be like?

THE BLESSING OF "OUR DAILY BREAD" (A CHRISTIAN BLESSING)

Ever since 1990, there's been a daily devotional and Bible reading my Granny, Aunt, and I have done. It's called: "OUR DAILY BREAD." It's one that you'll find in most churches and ministries on their giveaway rack. And, it's one of the best daily resources I've found.

Here's the link:

I know I can read it for free on the previous link, or get it from the church for free, but I choose to buy it for my Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet, knowing they (ODB) receive some of the money for it--and I can keep notes in the daily devotional on the Kindle and save them for life. It's rather nice to have several years of these on hand, where I can look at, for example, October 16 of several years, and their highlights and notes, and see what all has happened in my life between now and then, it's a way I can track my journey with the Lord. This is a blessing.

I decided about a week ago to do the Bible reading program they use again for the next year in order to read my Bible through in a year. I haven't done this in a couple of years, so it's time. (A blessing.)

Our Daily Bread is a blessing. Each writer of the devotionals is a blessing. The ministry of ODB is a blessing. Knowing my Granny and Aunt read them as well, the same day as I do, is a blessing. Knowing that people around the world read them on the same day as well is another blessing.

It's also another way I focus my day each morning. This, too, is a blessing.

It always amazes me how much the daily devotional will speak to me (blessing) and the Daily Bible reading (a blessing). But, the times they do not, it's amazing. within a week, the material is something I share with someone else. That's something I always try to remember on those days when I'm-just-not-feelin'-it. I ask myself the question: Then, who is this for? (It's a blessing for someone else.) Then, within a month, that material is usually applicable to me as well.

God's Word never comes out empty or void (see Isaiah 55:11).

I am so grateful.

IN ORDER THEY WERE RECEIVED

Please know I will share the Stories of Blessing in the order they were received.

This is to help eliminate priority order of any kind. I would rather go in the order of time given. It also adds meaning to see where they fit in among all the other blessings.

STORIES OF BLESSING FROM DENVER

Blessings at this moment:

I'm alive.  It's a new day.  Out on balcony watching leaves falling off trees beginning to show their naked limbs. Beautiful sight.

Watching Molly, my cat. Sleep after crazy night,  but not for long.

No matter how tired I am just knowing what a beautiful day I'm about to encounter.

Thinking of you and so proud of you and your decisions!

Yes,  it's a beautiful day!

THE BLESSING OF PUMPKIN SOUP

Written 2014-10-16 10:57:11, Thursday

Have you ever noticed how food is a blessing?

Also, food seems to stir up fond memories. (Another blessing.)

Recipes seem to do the same. (Yep. Another blessing.)

Also, have you noticed how some foods, and some recipes, are traditions? (Blessing.)

Let me start off by saying: For those of you who like pumpkin, but have never tried pumpkin soup, try it! It's like warm pumpkin pie without the extra calories. Now, before you crinkle your nose at me, like I did, at the sound of pumpkin soup, and even when you read the recipe, try it. You'll be blessed. (Unless you don't like one of the ingredients, of course!)

I wish I could say this was a recipe passed down from my family for generation. But, it simply isn't the case. I found it a couple of years ago and have made it a modern staple and tradition.

I made some today--the first batch of the season and am quite pleased with how it turned out. I have to admit, it makes me all warm inside for two different reasons: It's warm--and because it makes me feel content.

Also, it's healthy. Lower in calorie. Easy to make. Is quick to cook. And, it's pumpkin--the time of Fall--and Harvest--and Thanksgiving. (All blessings.)

Try it, or make some of your own, and start a tradition in your house and family.

RECIPE FOR PUMPKIN SOUP

1 16 oz can of pumpkin (regular--not pumpkin pie style)

1 cup chicken broth (This was the ingredient I turned my nose up at. I love it, but with pumpkin? It adds to the recipe, believe it or not! I'm glad I tried it.)

Cook in a small saucepan. Mix up ingredients. Cook on low as you add these spices:

Use whatever you use for pumpkin pie and flavor it to your taste. Use these spices in powdered form:
Cinnamon (Several shakes)
Allspice
Ginger
Nutmeg (Easy does it)
Cloves
Add couple of shakes of each and stir in pan.

Then, add lid (cover).

Turn up to medium until it starts to bubble. Then, turn it to medium-low. Cook 5 minutes.

Add 1/4 cup half-in-half.

Then, add lid (cover).

Turn up to medium until it starts to bubble. Then, turn it to medium-low. Cook 5 minutes.

Try it. How are the spices? If good, then serve warm. Makes about two larger servings or four tiny servings. If needs more spices, add more, and cover and cook a couple of minutes--try again.

That's it.

Tip: So, if you are feeling rather indulgent, you can have the entire batch in one sitting for about 400 calories. Or, space it out into two if it's just you. Or, do what I do. I make a batch and sample it all day--a couple of serving spoons full until you have half. then, repeat tomorrow. But, that's just me.

The soup is a blessing and sharing it with you is as well.
