My New Writing Space and Desk

I am so excited! I finally have my new desk set-up exactly the way I want it (thanks to my husband). The desk, printer tray/shelf, and monitor stands are new and all my favorite inspirational knick-knacks are on my desk as well. And, there's still plenty of room for cat to explore, walk all over, and lay on if he so desires.

This is where I do a lot of journaling and writing. My sofa is the next most likely place--and then a coffee shop.

I do not know if my writing was terrible and he was saving me from myself. Or, if he wanted to get my attention. Then again, maybe he was just being cat. Enough said? Lol.

I got my new Fire yesterday--and am thrilled with it so far. It's a wonderful device and is more than I hoped--which is always nice.

I will tell you more about it later.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9" News

A couple of weeks ago, I shared how my husband bought me the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9" (for Christmas) and how I am thrilled about it. I am hoping to get it the last week of November or the first week of December--and am quite impatient.

I have the Amazon Kindle Fire 7", the 1st generation of the Fire and have LOVED it. I would recommend it to everyone. I give it 9 stars out of 10. 

Well... I decided I am even more impatient for a keyboard to go with it. So, I bought one on Amazon today. It will show up well before the Fire HD 8.9" does, but I can use it with the Fire I have now and with my cell phone! (How cool is that?!?) 

So, now, I am even more excited to have portable writing stuff I can take around the world at any time. It will make my writing easier and I will be able to get more done. This is why I am excited.

The Fire has already changed how I write. Preparing to get the latest Fire, I have changed even more--and am now a paperless writer. (That still boggles my mind.) Technology is pretty amazing. What a blessing.

Happy Friday!

I wanted to show you some more pictures of my writing space and writing companions (and inspiration). 

This is Sinan (pronounced See-naw-n). Is he paperweight, supervisor, wise guy, muse, or curious cat? Maybe a little of each.

Should I take a hint about my writing today? (This is Zack.)

This is another angle of my writing space and you can see the turtle tank. (Shelly is being a goof and if you look really hard, you can see Harry.) 

Those are all of our 4-legged kids. We do not have any 2-legged yet. 

The cat is still perched on the corner of my desk. Now that there is room for him to sit, thanks to my paperless method, he seems quite content. Hopefully he won't play with the cursor or walk across my keyboard.

Paperless Writing

Well... I have done it. 

I have gone paperless with regards to my writing. 

I never thought I would. But, I have. 

Why have I gone paperless? 

Here is a hint: It is not to save trees. Trees are a renewable resource. I recycle all paper and paper products, sure. But, this is not why.

1 Because I can. I figured out how to do so.

2 I want to save and re-save everything over the internet so all of my writing is permanent and can never be lost, stolen, destroyed through acts of God (hurricanes, tornadoes, fires), lost by movers and never recovered, damaged by spilling of a drink, or anything else like that. 

3 It is cleaner and less cluttered.

4 I carry less with me now. It is easier on my back and body.

5 I am trying to downsize everything and get rid of stuff that takes up room. This is it.

I am still rather shocked by it, truth be known. 

So, this is all I ever need to write:

By the way, yes... When at home, I use two monitors. One has the internet and my Kindle on it (split-screened). The other monitor has my Kingsoft Writer document of my entire novel open on it. (Since I have stopped using Microsoft products.) Two monitors save me a great deal of time. That way, I am not clicking constantly between so many screens. Also, on the internet and Amazon Kindle monitor, I put pictures on it to inspire my writing.

Why the Amazon Kindle Fire HD LTE 4G?

The Amazon Kindle Fire 2011 version is a WiFi only device. That brings limitations. For instance: I MUST have a Wi-Fi hotspot or I cannot use anything that connects to the Internet. As a writer who depends on being able to do research at will, it is an issue. Also, the screen size can be limiting.
The Amazon Kindle Fire HD means I can write, and research, ANYWHERE at any time--provided the battery is charged--or I have a charger with me. (It uses the same as my cell phone, so this is quite handy. I have wall and car chargers all over the place, needless to say.)
Also, I can read a book anywhere. This is huge for me. I am always writing or reading, after all.
I will be counting down the days!
And! I am getting a PERSIMMON cover for it, too. (Orange, for the more simple, like me.) It will be pretty!
I will let you know what I think of it.

The Way I Write: My Writing Space

What do I do for a living? I am a writer.

Writing is a business, is an art, is a craft, is work, is a passion, is something I have to constantly work at and improve my skills. Consequently, I am constantly morphing my craft. I am always seeking a way to do it better. This includes my writing space.

My writing space has to be portable. I have to be able to take it anywhere on a moment's notice. Literally. It needs to be that I can pick up right where I left off--without having to get in the right frame of mind--because I always have my work space and I always have the right frame of mind.

How is possible to always have the right (or shall I say "write") frame of mind for writing? I get it through the habit of my workspace.

Attach pictures of my latest traveling/portable workspace. I tend to carry too much with me and I am always trying to find a way to streamline this portable writing space.

Picture this, though. I always have my Amazon Kindle Fire with me. Period. End of story. I also always have a charger with me. As it so happens, my cell phone and the Fire take the same plug. Whew.

Now, I have two 3-ring binders that are the canvas type with a zipper with a shoulder belt or a handhold so I can carry it like a messenger's bag or like a brief case. I have a bright purple and a red one. Eventually, I might need to get a third case because this book will be that huge. Sigh. But, we are not going to go there yet. Right now, I am using just the purple one.

I always type up my writing. That way, I can save it online so it is permanent. Paper tends to get lost through movers, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and fires. (I will tell you that story later.) I then print out each page as it is typed--provided I am at home and can print it. Otherwise, I save it multiple ways until I can print it.

Right now, the book is roughly 14,000 words and is 57 pages long.

I always have coffee and a glass of water as I write.

I am a sticky flag queen so I can easily find material in my binder. In my binder, I include research for the book.

I also always have red, blue, purple, and black ink pens for editing. I am a pen snob and only Paper Mate Profile Pens will do.

Should I mention how school supply time is my favorite time of year? (Speaking of, I  need to get a new box of 20# bond white, 8.5 x 11 this weekend. I am almost out of paper. We shall see how long this lasts with writing a telephone book size book.) I just got 2 more ink cartridges for my printer today.

Why am I sharing all of this with you? Just to give you an idea of what my business of writing looks like. It helps you to identify me and what I do--and just to tell you something a little different.

My Trusted Writing Compaions

This photo gives you an idea of my writing space and of the assistance I get while writing. Granted, it does not give the full effect, but you get the idea.

The cat is Sinan (pronounced See-naw-n).

There are two turtles in the tank. Shelly is the one making the appearance. Nelly is to the left and outside the picture. Hence, I have a water feature going constantly--thanks to the tank and the water filter--very calming.

Sinan is sitting on the lefthand side of my desk. Zack Beagle is on the floor on his dog bed in back of me and to my write. I mean right.

This is how I spend my days writing and working on my NaNoWriMo book. Life, including the writing life, does not get much better.
